Earth Day Sensory Bag Activity

In honor of today’s Earth Day, we are going to show you how to create a fun Earth Day sensory bag.

Earth Day was started on April 22, 1970, as a way to bring awareness to preserving the Earth’s natural resources and reducing the pollution that was being done.

Materials You Need To Make The Earth Day Sensory Project

  • You will need paper or thick cardstock.
  • A gallon Ziploc plastic bag.
  • Watercolors or other markers to the color printable images.
  • Free printable download from our site.
  • Packaging tape.
  • Water beads or “Orbeez”.
  • Paintbrush.
  • Hair gel.
  • Water.
  • Scissors

What Are Orbeez?

Orbeez is a brand of water beads. Water beads are a combination of water and water-absorbing polymers. Water beads are non-toxic but you will certainly want to use supervision when your kids are playing with water beads. It is definitely not suggested that they be ingested. You can buy water beads dry or already pre-soaked.

Water beads when submersed in water will soak up the water and swell to many times their dry size.

Here are some popular water bead brands we recommend.

How To Create The Water Bead Sensory Bag

The process for creating this sensory bag is simple and straightforward.

  1. You will first need to download and print the free Earth Day printable. I highly suggest printing the printable on thicker cardstock paper if you are able to. This will make your sensory bag more rigid.
  2. Be sure to add the dry water beads or Orbeez to a container with water so that they can absorb and grow larger before starting your sensory bag.
  3. Use another piece of cardstock to print out a second copy of the printable. You will cut out the Earth image of the second sheet in order to place the open portion of the paper over the Ziploc bag.
  4. Have your child color in the first Earth with their favorite coloring device. For this project, we had our son color the Earth using watercolors.
  5. The next step is to clean off the Ziploc bag with rubbing alcohol if there are any markings on your bag.
  6. Tape the colored Earth image paper to the back of the Ziploc bag with the image facing up through the bag.
  7. Then tape the other open cardstock to the top of the Ziploc bag so you can see the Earth through the hole.
  8.  Add in a decent amount of the water beads into the Ziploc bag and a hair gel with a little bit of water for good flow.
  9. Seal up the bag and tape all four sides of the sensory bag in order to prevent the bag from leaking.
  10. Have your child play and enjoy!
