March is already in full swing and St. Patrick’s Day is only about a week away now. Even more exciting in our home is that Spring is right around the corner!

For the month of March, we created a fun St. Patrick’s Day reading log chart that your kids can use to log their reading progress.

What Is A Reading Log?

A reading log or chart is a simple journal that you can use to track either what you read or how frequently you read. It can be very simple, like the one we created, or can be more complex, allowing you to write in the book titles, or how many pages you read also.

Why Reading Logs Are Important

The most common purpose of a reading log is for students to keep track of the books they have read to show their teachers. This serves a very basic need as the child(student) needs a reading log to receive the credit for their work. However, this is not the only reason for using reading logs.

Reading logs can serve as a long-term record of a child’s reading preferences, or personal interests.

A reading log can help children reflect on the books they have read in the past and they can use this information to form new reading goals in the future.

How To Use The Leprechaun Reading Log

To use the reading log, simply print out the reading log.

Our goal for this reading log was to be very simple for children to use. You can have your children either color in the shamrocks as they:

  1. Complete reading a book, or
  2. Read for a set period of time on a daily basis

We hope that using this reading chart will encourage children to set goals to read on a daily basis, or if they don’t read yet, they can be read to from Mom or Dad!

An example use could be to have your child read each day for 5 or 10 minutes. When they are done reading then have them color in the shamrock to show they read for that day.

You could also have your child mark in the shamrock if they complete a whole book.

Reading is Important and Fun!

We need to be encouraging our children to read. Reading helps kids increase their creativity and build their vocabularies. Even if your kids are too young to be reading on their own, it’s a good practice for parents to be reading to their kids to help build good habits.

We started reading to our children even as a newborn.

The most important thing for young readers is that it is fun, enJOY!
