winter snowman ten frame roll a dice math printable bundle

Today’s free printable bundle activity is a winter snowman ten frame activity for helping your young child develop number sense and basic addition skills.

What is a Ten Frame?

Very simply, a ten frame is a rectangle divided into two rows with ten equal squares. So a ten frame literally has ten frames, hence the name, ten frame.

Ten frames are fantastic tools that are so versatile. You can use a wide variety of items and manipulatives to help your toddler develop their number sense.

Using a ten frame to teach counting numbers with your children allows them to visualize through sight and touch of items being used in the ten frame.

For instance, our son can count all the way to 100 pretty easily but he has simply memorized counting. It is difficult to quantify whether or not he understands what he is doing by counting to 100.

By using the ten frame, we can help him better visualize and understand basic counting and arithmetic with the ten frame.

How Do We Use Ten Frames?

Ten frames are used for counting and can make counting values easier for young learners. You can visualize them rather simply by grouping them in 5’s and 10’s. It also helps with forming the basis for place value as they develop.

Three Reasons Ten Frames Help Preschoolers Better Learn

  1. Ten frames better help preschoolers prepare for elementary school math by building a strong counting foundation.
  2. It helps kids develop conceptual learning and a deeper understanding of numbers.
  3. Kids can learn to better create groups of numbers by using ten frames.

How To Use The Winter Snowman Ten Frame

The good news about using ten frames is that there really aren’t very many rules to worry about. You would simply print out the ten frame printable bundle.

The winter snowman activity can be used as a stand-alone activity or can be used in conjunction with the double ten frame grid that is included in the download.

You can choose to use the included snowman accessories and buttons to fill the ten frame, or you could choose to add your own items and manipulatives to add to this printable.

  • To use this activity, have your child roll the dice.
  • Count the amount of dots on the dice facing up.
  • Place this amount of buttons or other manipulatives into the first ten frame.
  • Then roll the dice a second time and count the dots facing up.
  • Your child would then fill in the remainder of the first ten frame with the second set of differently colored buttons.
  • Then count the ten frame to see what the first and second dice rolls add up to.

You could then do this same process with just the snowman shape and not use the ten frame. You would simply fill in the middle snowman circle with buttons or manipulatives and then fill in the bottom circle with buttons and manipulatives after the second roll. Then write in the first and second numbers on the addition equation line to add them up and find the answer.

Note: In our video below we combined both activities in order to utilize the ten frame and build a snowman activity. We also placed the snowman in a clear slipcover so we could write in our numbers with a dry erase marker.

How To Make The Dice

To make the dice, simply cut out the included dice shape along the perimeter lines. You will then need to fold along the lines in order to form the cube shape for the dice. You can then use school glue, or a glue stick to glue the cube together.

  • Your kids can then use these shapes to build a snowman with different features.
  • You could also use this printable as a coloring activity to decorate the snowman shapes as they see fit.
