What Is The Ketogenic Diet
A ketogenic diet is essentially a high-fat, adequate-protein, and usually extremely low-carbohydrate diet. The ketogenic diet forces one’s body to use fats as its energy source instead of mostly using carbs.
Many people use this diet to limit or lose stored fat as there are many studies that have shown a ketogenic diet as being highly effective in this goal.
Eating a diet that is high in fat and low in carbohydrate forces your body to enter the process of ketosis, which causes it to burn fat as its fuel and not sugars and carbohydrates. Eating foods that are very low in carbs is essential for this process to work effectively.
What Are The Different Types of Ketogenic Diets
There are actually many different ketogenic diets and they mostly vary by either differing macronutrient amounts, or by periodically coming out of keto and having what is known as “refeeding periods” where you add in higher amounts of carbohydrates. However, the most commonly used ketogenic diets are as follows,
- Standard Ketogenic Diet – The standard keto diet is high fat, moderate protein, and very low carbohydrate. The macronutrients break down to approximately 70% Fat, 20% Protein, and only 10% Carbohydrates.
- Cyclical Ketogenic Diet – The cyclical keto diet has periods of higher than normal carbohydrate refeed days. This could break down to having six days of a standard ketogenic diet and then only one day of adding in more carbohydrates.
- Targeted Ketogenic Diet – A targeted keto diet is one in which you can add in higher amounts of carbohydrates only around workouts.
- High Protein Ketogenic Diet – The high protein ketogenic diet is essentially a standard keto diet but changes the macronutrients to 60% fats, 30% protein, and 10% carbohydrates.
What Is Ketosis
Ketosis is a metabolic state in which the body uses fat instead of carbohydrates for its fuel.
