How To Start A WordPress Blog With Bluehost Step-By-Step
My hope is that this guide will help you get your blog up in running today. What’s great about blogging is that literally, anyone can start a blog, even if you’re a complete beginner.
Now, even though you might be new to the blogging world, this step-by-step process should take you approximately 1 or 2 hours to complete. Please follow the steps in this guide closely so you give yourself the best foundation for making money with your blog.
Here’s what I will cover in this section of the guide:
Choosing A Blogging Niche
First things first. You will need to ask yourself what your site is going to be about. The topic you pick to write about for your blog will determine the first 10 – 15 articles you should write on your blog. So it’s important to choose a topic you will enjoy writing about and one that interests your audience.
Choosing a niche is finding out what you’re going to want to write about for your blog.
This is a very important step in beginning your blog. You want to choose a niche that you have an interest in and that you have some form of knowledge about, and that has interest from others.
The tough part is finding a sweet spot between your interests and having enough interest from your readers in order to make sure it’s a subject that will get enough traffic to your site.
For a detailed explanation of how to research and choose your blog niche, you should check out Suzi Whitford’s Blog By Number blog course. It has literally every detail that you would need to start a blog from the beginning to making your first few dollars online.
It is excellent for those that have little to no experience blogging!
Picking A Domain Name
This is where you choose a keyword-rich domain name that will act as your website’s address. You will definitely want to choose a web address that contains keywords that are related to your specific niche or subject.
For example, you have a gardening niche where you talk about gardening with raised beds.
For this specific example, you might name your blog www.raisedbedgardening.com. This would be a good name that contains keywords closely related to your topic or niche.
Tips To Remember When Picking A Domain Name
- Keep it short and easy to remember and spell
- Don’t waste a bunch of time sitting around brainstorming to find just the right name
- Just choose a name and get started blogging
- Have fun with your blog and really enjoy the process
Setting Up Web Hosting
Next, you will want to go to Bluehost.com in order to set up your Webhosting account and WordPress blog.
You will want to choose a web hosting package for your WordPress account. I would recommend for now that you choose the Basic account package for just one blog. If you’ve never started a site before I recommend you focus your effort on only one site for now. When you grow your one site and it becomes successful, then start to think about adding another site.
Choosing the Basic hosting account will also save you a lot of money upfront.
Now it is time for you to name your site and give it an address. You will enter in potential names that you want to name your site and see if your given name is available.
For your first site, I recommend that you only choose the .com extension as it is the most widely used and accepted extension for blogs. I would also try to pick a name that doesn’t need a hyphen in the name, e.g. (mom-blogger-tips.com).
The reason for this is you want to make the name as easy as possible for people to remember. It can be hard to remember to add hyphens in a web address for some people.
Another great thing about using Bluehost for your web hosting is that they include the domain name for free with your signup of web hosting!
Once you’ve found a domain name that works for your chosen niche, press the continue button to move to confirmation.
Enter your personal details and payment information for the Bluehost web hosting account.
You can choose a pricing term from 12 months up to 36 months.
In my opinion, I would choose the basic 36-month plan as you’re going to save a bunch of money on web hosting over those 3 years. It is a big money saver and totally worth it to lock in that price.
Another thing about the package extras would be that they’re optional. I don’t sign up for all of those extra add-ons as they don’t really help you with starting your site or making it any better. I would just skip those options.
Summary Steps For Signing Up For Web Hosting Through Bluehost
- Go to Bluehost and click the “Get Started Now” button.
- Click on the package you are interested in.
- Enter the domain name you registered with earlier, or sign up for a new domain name here.
- Enter your personal and payment information.
- You will then be asked to enter a password. Make sure it’s a secure password that you will remember.

Installing WordPress On Your Domain Name
Now, onto the most exciting part of the process, installing WordPress onto your domain account. Luckily for all of us that have signed up for web hosting through Bluehost, it is a simple straightforward process.
- Log into your Bluehost cPanel account
- Find the website section and click install WordPress
- Click the install button
- Choose the domain name you want to install WordPress on
- If necessary, you can update your email and account information for the new install
- Read the license and service agreements
- Select the install now button
- Voila! You now have WordPress installed on your site
Designing Your Blog
Once you have set up your Bluehost account and installed WordPress on your account, you’re going to want to choose a WordPress theme for your site. The theme is how your blog will appear to the visitors to your site.
For choosing your theme, you’re going to want to choose a theme that doesn’t have a long loading time. If your blog takes a long time to load it could negatively affect your SERP position on Google search.
There are two different paid WordPress themes I would recommend for your blog:
Both WordPress blog themes are industry-leading. They both allow you to visually create your blog’s layout with drag-and-drop functionality.
They are both good WordPress theme choices for those that don’t have any prior web design experience. Really, either one of the two would be a good choice. You can’t really go wrong with either choice.
You can pick up your copy of the Divi WordPress theme here from Elegant Themes
You can pick up your copy of the Elementor WordPress theme framework here.
Create High-Quality Content For Your Blog
The success of your blog will largely depend on the quality and quantity of the content you’re able to produce on a consistent basis.
If I could give you the one biggest predictor of your blog’s success, it would be:
Content is the lifeblood of your blog, and the simple reason is that your audience will only come back to read your blog if you post new content to look at!
If you write 50 blog posts in six months, then all of a sudden stop making new posts. Your readers are going to become bored, and know that you haven’t been writing new content for a while and stop coming back to your blog.
The 2nd reason you need to be creating fresh, new content for your blog is that Search Engines like Google are not going to send much traffic to your site through organic search.
So How Do We Create Fresh, New Content That Gets Readers And Organic Search?
- You Need Some Knowledge and Understanding of The Subject Your Writing About – Needless to say, you should have some form of knowledge of the niche and subject that you’re blogging about. This is not always the case, but it will greatly help you to create blog posts when you have an understanding of the subject matter.
- You Could Also Read Other Blogs In Your Niche To Get Ideas Of What To Write About – Reading other bloggers’ content is often a good way to learn what is popular in a niche and could be helpful for you to learn what you should be writing about. I, however, never recommend copying someone else’s work. Copying someone else’s work also won’t help you in the eyes of Google, as it would be deemed as duplicate content.
- You Could Utilize An A.I. Writing Assistant In Order To Help You Write Your Blog Posts – Artificial intelligence writers have come a long way in writing unique content. There are a few AI writing Tools that can help you write blog post ideas, blog outlines, and even whole blog posts in some cases. I don’t recommend you rely heavily on an AI writer as you will still need to know about your niche to fact-check the AI writer.
If you’re wanting to check out a really good AI writing assistant that I’ve found valuable then check out the Jasper AI writing tool. This has been one of the best AI writing assistants that I’ve tried. I can have Jasper come up with blog post title ideas, blog outlines, and many other writing products.

Monetize Your WordPress Site
There are lots of ways to monetize your blog, but there are ways to make more money with your blog than others.
Monetizing your blog with ads is definitely a proven way that many blogs make money online. In this method, a blog gets traffic to come to your site and the ad agency pays you a set amount of money per 1,000 pageviews, sometimes called CPM (Cost Per Milli).
If the ad agency for instance gives you a CPM of $5 per 1,000 visitors and your goal is to earn $2,000 per month with your blog then you will need to have approximately 400,000 pageviews per month. Yikes! You would need to drive a ton of traffic just to make $2,000. It’s doable, but will definitely take some time.
CPM rates vary from the type of niche and also from the type of ads served, or even from the ad agency also.
Does Monetizing Your Website With Ads Make Sense?
Monetizing with ads can make a lot of sense for some bloggers that might be creating content for niches that have limited potential in other monetization methods.
For monetizing with ads to work for you, your blog will need at least 50,000 sessions to qualify to join some of the ad agencies.
Mediavine requires you to have approximately 50,000 monthly sessions per month (around 60,000 pageviews per month) in order to join its ad network.
AdThrive requires that you have approximately 50,000 monthly sessions and around 100,000 page views per month. Some have commented that they notice that AdThrive pays a bit more for their ads.
Ezoic currently allows all bloggers to apply to their ad network with no pageview requirements. They do ask however that growing blogs with less than 10,000 page views per month apply through their Access Now Program. Some have commented that Ezoic pays between $10 to $40 per 1,000 page views, which is pretty good if you have some traffic coming to your site.
A new site is going to take a while to build up to the traffic levels needed to earn a significant amount of money per month using ads. In most cases, you are going to want to consider using other monetization methods for a new blog.
The main cons to using display advertising on your blog are that:
- It clutters up your blog and reduces the reader’s experience in my opinion.
- It doesn’t pay nearly as well as other monetization methods.
Drive Traffic From Search Engines And Social Media
If you’re wanting to make a full-time income from your blog, you’re going to need to get traffic (readers) to your blog. There is a quote that says, “traffic has a way of curing all worries.”
Why Is Blog Traffic Important For A Website?
You should be narrowing your focus on targeting good, organic traffic to your website.
Why? Because these are the visitors who are spending their time actively searching for the info that your blog is providing. The benefit of this is that they’re more likely to engage with your content and become qualified leads!
SEO stands for search engine optimization. It’s a process of improving the ranking of your website in internet searches. There are many factors that determine how high your website appears on results pages, such as:
- Keyword Research
- Content Creation, and
- Using The Right Keywords Throughout Your Site.
These strategies can help you improve the visibility of your site and attract more customers.
There are many different ways that you can use the power of SEO to grow your business.
- Keyword Research – One of the first things that you should do is conduct keyword research. This involves identifying terms and phrases that people are likely to search for when looking for products and services like yours. By understanding what keywords your target audience is searching for, you can create content that better meets their needs and attracts more traffic to your site.
- Create Quality Content – Another important strategy is creating quality content on a regular basis. This can include blog posts, articles, social media updates, and more. Not only will this help you improve your search ranking, but it can also boost customer engagement and help build a loyal following for your brand.
- Using The Right Keywords Throughout Your Site – Finally, it’s important to use the right keywords throughout your site. This means incorporating relevant keywords into your website title, meta descriptions, headers, and other elements that are likely to be seen by search engine crawlers. Additionally, you should use these keywords in the content of your site, as well as in backlinks to other websites and social media posts.
With the right SEO strategy, you can improve the visibility and ranking of your website online. By incorporating these tips into your strategy, you can start generating more traffic and growing your business online.
For an in-depth rundown of what SEO is and how to effectively implement this strategy on your own site, I recommend picking up the SEO Blueprint For Bloggers, from Create and Go.
This SEO Blueprint is the most thorough system that I’ve found for gaining SEO organic traffic from Google.
How To Drive Social Media Traffic Through Pinterest
Pinterest is a social media website that has been frequently called a “Visual Search Engine”. The visual portion of that is that users create “click-able images”, or “pins” that Pinterest’s users can search on the site for all sorts of different ideas.
Pinterest also has a social component to its features, as you can follow other Pinterest users’ accounts and get updates about those users’ new pins. Although, recently in 2022 it has been discussed that the social nature of the site is not as used as it once had been.
How Does Pinterest Help You Get Traffic?
The way Pinterest brings you traffic is that you create a new pin, with an image with a 2:3 size, or 1000 pixels x 1500 pixels. You fill out a Pin Title, Description, Alt Tag, and a Link to the blog post that you want the Pinterest user to go to.
It is important that you use keyword-rich titles and descriptions for your pins as Pinterest is a search engine and is operating closer to how Google would send organic traffic from doing good SEO.
Many large Pinterest account users were receiving 100’s thousands of page views to their blogs mostly through creating pins that pointed to their blog posts. However, recently in 2022, many bloggers have commented that the amount of organic traffic from Pinterest has not been as good as it once was.
I would still recommend you to use Pinterest for driving traffic to your blog, especially if you are a new blog, as it can help you gain traffic quicker than if you relied on Google alone.
Basic Strategy For Driving Traffic With Pinterest
- Create a pin image with dimensions 1000 px wide x 1500 px tall.
- Pins that tend to perform well are those that build intrigue and make the Pinterest user curious about your post.
- The pin images are a mixture of text and images.
- Your Pin Titles and Descriptions should be SEO-researched, and they should point to an article that utilizes similar keywords.
- I recommend creating 3 to 5 different pin images per blog post.
- I would spread out your pins over different days. If you want to schedule your pins at the optimal times then I recommend using a service like Tailwind, which can better optimize your pins.
Pinterest Traffic Avalanche – There is a lot more work that goes into driving traffic with Pinterest.
If you’re wanting to learn more about Pinterest and how it can help you increase your traffic to your blog then I recommend the Pinterest Traffic Avalanche program from Create and Go.
They dive way more into SEO, pin creation, and board creation than I could in this post.
Most Common Ways Bloggers Monetize Their Site?
The most common way bloggers make money on their blogs is through advertising networks, either through traditional display advertising or through affiliate marketing programs. Other ways to monetize a blog include selling products or services, offering premium content or services for a fee, and even accepting donations.
Display Advertising Networks
We discussed this previously in this post, but display advertising is one of the most common forms of monetization on blogs. These ads are typically sold through ad networks such as Google AdSense, Ezoic, or Mediavine.
Advertisers pay the network, which in turn pays the blog owner based on the traffic the ads generate.
Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is another popular way to monetize a blog. In this model, the blog owner promotes products or services from other companies in return for a commission on sales. For example, a blog about gardening could include affiliate links to gardening tools or seeds. When a reader clicks on one of these links and makes a purchase, the blog owner earns a commission.
Many bloggers online today monetize their websites using affiliate marketing.
Sell Your Own Digital Or Physical Products
Selling products or services is another way to monetize a blog. For example, a blog about photography could sell photography prints or offer online courses teaching photography.
You could create and sell printables through your blog. This is a really great way how to make money online through your blog, as you create a digital file and don’t have to ship any product physically. You only need to create the product and place it on your blog or through Etsy, and it will continue to make you money month after month.
Printables By Number is a different course created by Suzi Whitford that teaches you exactly how to start a printables online business, even if you’ve never created a printable in your life.
I’ve used this course to learn how to create digital printables and sell them for a more passive form of income for my online business!
Creating Printables is also a great way to express yourself creatively, and to supplement or replace your full-time income. I highly recommend it for those wanting a more passive form of making money. You do the work upfront, but then it starts to take over as time goes on.
Premium content or services is another way to monetize a blog. In this model, the blog owner offers exclusive, premium content or services to readers for a fee.
For example, a blog about travel could offer a paid subscription that gives readers access to exclusive travel deals, discounts on hotels and restaurants, or early access to travel articles.
Accepting donations is another way to monetize a blog. In this model, readers can choose to make a donation to the blog owner in return for continued access to the content.
For example, a blog about animal rescue could accept donations from readers who want to help support the work being done.
For most blogs, however, I don’t recommend using a donation-based strategy as the other methods have a lot higher earning potential. For instance, there are many high-earning bloggers making six figures with their blogs using just affiliate marketing.
What Are Sponsored Posts?
A sponsored post is a piece of content that you publish on your website or blog for money. In most cases, a company will pay you to write about its product or service in exchange for money.
This is commonly known as “native advertising” because the content fits in well with the style and tone of your other posts.
Often, sponsored posts are used to raise awareness about new products or services or to direct traffic to a company’s website.
Sponsored posts also have become a popular way for bloggers and influencers to make money online.
If you’re interested in making money with sponsored posts, there are a few things that you need to know.
Let’s take a look at some of the basics for doing sponsored posts:
1. Become an expert on your topic. To create high-quality content for sponsors and readers alike, it helps to be familiar with your subject matter.
This will make you a more credible and authoritative source for your readers, which can help increase your chances of getting sponsored posts in the future.
2. Build a portfolio of your work. Many companies that pay for sponsored posts will want to see some examples of your previous content before they agree to work with you.
To make it easier to sell yourself as a sponsored post writer, build a portfolio that showcases your work.
3. Reach out to companies and brands directly. One of the best ways to land sponsored post gigs is by finding companies that you want to work with and reaching out to them directly.
This can be as simple as sending an email or adding them on social media and letting them know that you’re interested in creating sponsored content for them.
Making money with sponsored posts can be a great way to build your online presence while also generating some extra income. Just remember to keep these tips in mind as you get started!

What Is My Favorite Way To Monetize My Blog And Make Extra Income From Home
There are many ways that people can make extra money from home, but the number one way is definitely through affiliate marketing from your blog.
Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money online because it allows you to promote other people’s products from your blog and earn commissions for every sale that you generate.
If you’re not familiar with affiliate marketing, it’s basically a way for you to recommend products on behalf of other companies and earn a commission.
When you promote a product and someone makes a purchase, you earn a commission.
It’s a great way to earn money online because you can promote products that you’re passionate about and make money while doing it.
One of the keys to success in promoting products as an affiliate is that you only recommend those that you have used and really like. This is an important part of building trust with your audience that you recommend what you love.
There are tons of affiliate programs out there, so finding the right one for you can take some time. Once you find a program that you’re interested in, though, it’s easy to get started. All you need to do is sign up for an account and start promoting products.
If you’re looking for a great way to make extra money from home, affiliate marketing is definitely the way to go. With a little time and effort, you can start earning commissions and making money while doing something that you love.
I really like the Six-Figure Course Creator program, as it teaches you how to create a course from ideation through launching your product.
I also really like this course because it has an in-depth affiliate marketing section that does a really great job of teaching you everything you need to know for doing affiliate marketing on your blog.
Alex and Lauren’s resources are invaluable and very helpful.
Wrapping Up How To Make Money Online In 2023 And Beyond
Making money online doesn’t have to be super complicated. We just need to realize that making money with our blog is not an overnight, make-six-figures-by-the-end-of-the-week type of process.
In many cases, building a successful online business in 2023 will take time. Most experts agree, that success usually takes anywhere from 6 months to over 2 years before you see any real return. However, many bloggers that have been successful and made a full-time income with their blogs agree that it was worth it and it is life-changing.
One of the best things you can do is evaluate where you are now in your journey and ask yourself what you can do now that will lead to a better life just 24 months from now. Starting a blog and an online business is one of the best investments you can make that will pay dividends later.
