St. Patrick’s Day Fizzy Rainbow Sensory Activity
Fizzy Rainbow Sensory Activity
I love using sensory activities in our homeschool education curriculum. Sensory activities engage all of a child’s senses which helps them learn more efficiently.
Sensory play can also be really fun and engaging for children, and that translates to kids that are genuinely interested in learning.
As a fun sensory activity for the St. Patrick’s Day holiday, we put together a baking soda and vinegar experiment with a twist.
We added in food coloring dye tablets that we had from Easter dying kits and some black cauldron’s we scored from our local Dollar Tree to represent the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Placed all together and you get a fun DIY sensory activity that your kids are going to love!
The Reaction Between Baking Soda and Vinegar
The reaction of baking soda when mixed with vinegar physically changes the two starting chemicals to something new. When you pour in the vinegar the mixture will vigorously react to produce carbon dioxide gas. If you use enough vinegar with the available baking soda, then it will consume all of the baking soda.
The chemical name of baking soda is Sodium bicarbonate and the chemical name for vinegar is Acetic acid.
The Reaction Equation For Sodium Bicarbonate and Acetic Acid
The reaction of Sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid equals Carbon dioxide, Water, and Sodium acetate.
What is a Baking Soda and Vinegar Volcano?
The baking soda and vinegar reactions are literally like the eruption of a real volcano. If you were to use different-shaped cups or bottles, you could increase the size of the eruptions.
Another fun idea would be to use a plastic bottle and fill it with baking soda and add your vinegar quickly and cork the top of the bottle. This will cause the pressure to increase a lot and will blow the cork out of the bottle. (Warning: use caution as the pressure that is produced could cause injury to children or adults. Adult supervision is definitely advised.)
Additional Idea For Fizzy Rainbow Sensory Activity
For this activity, we used dye tablets from Easter egg kits, but you can use food coloring, food coloring gel, kool-aid powder, or Jello mixed with baking soda and vinegar. Basically, most anything that you can use to color food can be used in this reaction.
We hope you enJoyed today’s fizzy rainbow sensory activity, and hope to see you again soon!
